Abstract
1433576 Testing TDM highways; testing coders and decoders INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 6 Aug 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 34476/74 Headings H4L H4K and H3H In a TDM system including a highway 1 extending via a multiplexer/demultiplexer to coders/decoders CN, DN, there is provided on the highway a time division multiplexed filter MDF associated with a memory MEM for storing the filter coefficients applicable to each time slot. The system further includes a calibration arrangement for determining the filter coefficients in dependence on the parameters of the coders and decoders and comprising a source of test signals UT situated at a control location, a precision calibration decoder and coder CP, DP and a calibration wire. To calibrate the filter for a coder allocated to a particular time slot, a calibration switch S1-SN, associated with the particular coder, is switched to position 2 and a digital test signal is sent from the test pulse source, via highway 1, the demultiplexer, and precision decoder DP, to the calibration wire. The test signal in analogue form then passes through a 2-4 wire hybrid LC1-LCN to the corresponding coder, where it is reconverted to digital form and is transmitted back to the central location over highway 1 and through the digital filter in the time slot allocated to the coder. At the central location the correct coefficients for the filter during the particular time slot are then determined from a comparison of the two signals. The reverse process is used for calibrating the filter for a time slot allocated to a decoder DN. The system may be a telephone system using PCM transmission and SPC, the test equipment being situated at an exchange.
