Abstract

1433333 Viewing apparatus FIDELITY INSTRUMENT CO Ltd 2 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 23165/72 Heading G2J [Also in Division H4] A binocular viewing device comprises means (e.g. prism 11, objective 17 and image intensifier 18) for providing an original luminous image on a surface 19 and at least two reflecting surfaces 22, 23 one of which is concave to focus at infinity a final image of the luminous image. The optical paths 25, 26, 27 lie substantially wholly within solid or liquid or partially solid and partially liquid media. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, an electro-optical periscope comprises a pentaprism 11 which directs light through an objective 17 and image intensifier 18 to form an image on cathode ray screen 19 attached to a prism 20. Prism 20 has a spherical, concave, reflecting face 22, which forms an image of the screen 19 at infinity, and a plane reflecting face 23 from which light leaves the prism to pass through a corrector plate 24 to both eyes of the observer. In a modification, Fig. 2, the prism 31 has two spherical reflecting faces 33, 34 and a semitransparent mirror 32. In another modification (not shown) of Fig. 1, the pentaprism is replaced by a triangular prism and prism 21 is provided with two plane mirror surfaces to give the correct image inversions. In yet another modification (not shown) the pentaprism is replaced by a roof prism and a sandwich of a photocathode, a channel plate and a cathodoluminescent screen replaces the intensifier 18. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3B, a line-ofsight image intensifier comprises an objective (not shown) which forms images on the photocathode of an intensifier 41 whose screen 46 is attached to a composite prism 43 of the form shown, wherein the spherical reflecting face 48 produces an image at infinity of screen 46. Another line-of-sight intensifier, Fig. 4A, comprises a fibre-optic bundle 64 between the screen 63 and prism 66 having a spherical reflecting face 67. Yet another line-of-sight intensifier, Fig. 5B, comprises a prism 71 having a plane reflecting face 72 and two spherical silvered surfaces 73, 74.
