Abstract
960, 383. Telescopes; periscopes; field glasses. G. HOPP. Oct. 19, 1960 [Nov. 17, 1959], No. 35851/60. Heading G2J. A telescope has a single eyepiece and two object glasses working with different magnifications, the image formed by the low power glass being of lower intensity. As shown in Fig. 5, the telescope housing 10 includes a wide angle object lens 11 which forms an image of a target in the plane of filter 12, this image being reproduced by lenses 13 and 16 in the focal plane of an eyepiece 18. A further magnified image of the target can be viewed in the eyepiece 18, this image being formed by the lens 16 which also receives from a partially reflecting surface 15 and an erecting prism 20 light from the field containing the target. Instead of the beam combining surface 15 being formed by the interface of a prism, a semi-reflecting disk may be used. This disk may have a reflectivity varying stepwise or continuously and be mounted for rotation in the light path between the lenses 13 and 16 so that as one image is darkened the other is made brighter. Between the two lenses 13 and 16, there may be interposed an additional deflecting prism so that the axis of the lens 11 is in-' clined to that of the lens 16. In Fig. 9 is shown a periscope having a double shaft 30, one of which incorporates wide angle lens 37, while the other incorporates a magnifying lens 34, the images formed by the two lenses being superposed at a partially reflecting interface 40 so that they can be viewed through an eyepiece 31. In the light path from each lens there may be disposed an image reflecting lens system, or for night vision an infra-red image converter in the latter use the converter which is in the light path from lens 37 being of lower power. In Fig. 11 is shown a pair of field glasses, each half of which includes the magnifying lens 61 or 61a and a wide angle lens 53 or 53a with filter 54 or 54a.
