Abstract
473,539. Telescopes for use on aircraft &c. HOUGHTON-BUTCHER MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., DRABBLE, J. E. L., and POOLE, V. J. A. April 16, 1936, No. 6457. [Class 97 (i)] A viewing device for use on aircraft to enable the pilot to observe the ground comprises a positive objective A of short focus and wide angle, a collecting lens C in or near the image plane of the objective A, an intermediate objective D, a second collecting lens E in or near the plane of the erected image formed by the objective D and an eyepiece lens F of such low magnification that the final image can be seen without any exact positioning of the eyes being required. The instrument also includes an even number of reflectors, each of which changes the direction of the optical axis. In the form shown in Fig. 2, three reflectors M2, M3, M4 are positioned within the instrument and a fourth reflector M1 is disposed externally to direct rays from the ground to the objective A, this reflector being pivoted at P to enable the ground to be traversed. A graticule may be provided in the plane of the image formed either by the lens A or by the lens D. The form shown in Fig. 7 comprises two reflectors M3, M4, the mounting for the optical elements comprising a fixed part H1 and a part H2 which can be rotated about a line in the surface of the reflector M4. This reflector is itself rotated about the same axis at half the speed of rotation of the tube H2. The form shown in Fig. 9 comprises two telescopes Ha, Hb for alternative use, one giving a large field with low magnification and the other a small field with high magnification. A single objective is mounted on a shaft 16 so that it can be moved into position for use with either of the telescopes, the other end of the shaft carrying a shutter 17 having an aperture which uncovers the appropriate eyepiece.
