Abstract

1293808 Direction finding J HEPPLEWHITE 23 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969 2 Jan 1970] 62656/69 and 244/70 Heading G1F [Also in Division G2] In a pair of prismatic binoculars, a compass capsule 14 is mounted in one lens barrel 6 connecting one of the objectives with an associated Porro prism system and eye-piece 12, an optical system including convex lenses 60, 62 being provided to project a magnified image of an illuminated part of an edge scale (26) of the compass card 20 into the focal plane of the objective so that a distant object and its bearing may be viewed simultaneously. The compass capsule 14 is preferably located between the objective and its focal plane, but is positioned so as to obstruct only partially light passing through the lens barrel. The compass card 20 is preferably illuminated by an electric light bulb 36 controlled by remotely housed switch 46, rheostat 48 and battery (75).
