Abstract

547,075. Cathode-ray tubes with light modulating screens for television. FARNSWORTH TELEVISION & RADIO CORPORATION. March 11, 1941, No. 3318. Convention date, Sept. 7, 1940. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii] A cathode-ray tube for modulating light for producing an image comprises a thin layer 18 of paraffin or other wax capable of being rendered locally transparent in dependence on the heat produced by local electron bombardment, and an optical system is adapted to project the light from a source 1 through a layer 18 and to reflect it back again through the same layer. The reflection is performed by a silver mirror 17 on which the electron beam is focused and scanned, this mirror being connected to the anode 8 to receive the same voltage. The light from the source 1 passes through a lens 2 which focuses the reflected light into an aperture containing lenses 27, which focuses the layer 18 on a viewing screen 29, a prism 28 being provided to deflect the light to the viewing screen. In a modification, the lenses 27 and prism 28 are disposed between the lens 2 and the cathode-ray tube ; and in another modification, the incident beam on the layer 18 is oblique and this layer is viewed directly, the optical system focusing the light source in the observer's eye.
