1432100 Heat-treating steel N I INST BETONA I ZHELEZOBETONA GOSSTROYA SSSR and MAKEEV METALLURGICHE ZAVOD IM SM KIROVA MICHERMETA URKAIN SSR 3 May 1974 19637/74 Heading C7 A structural steel component comprises a core of tempered martensite, an intermediate transitional zone and a surface layer of sorbite. Preferably the surface layer has a depth of 0À01 to 0À1 times the thickness of the component, and the intermediate layer a depth of 0À02 to 0À25 times that thickness. The structure is obtained by firstly forming a uniform tempered martensite structure, followed by superficial heating, preferably by induction to 720-770‹C followed by cooling. The invention is concerned particularly with reinforcing rods for concrete.
