1431267 Making electrical connections; jointing by stamping PLESSEY CO Ltd 26 Oct 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 56421/72 Headings B3A and B3Q An exchangeable jaw unit for a crimping machine comprises a pair of jaws and a ram for operating them, the ram being adapted for attachment to a driving member in the machine and at least one of the jaws being pivotable. As shown the unit includes a casing 8 in which the jaws are turned about pivots 14, 16 by a replaceable cam 18B floating in a slot in the ram 18 which has a further slot 24 to receive the hooked end of a slide 28. After sliding into position, the jaw unit is retained by plates 55, 57 bolted to the top of the machine casing 6, the plates 55, 57 including guides 60, 62 for wire to be joined by a connector, Fig. 4 (not shown). The ends of wire are trimmed by blades 64, 66 on the outer faces of the jaws 10, 12. The slide is operated through gearing or a ram 40 either direct or by means of a lever 32. A switch 80 connects the machine to a power supply and a further switch 82 starts the slide for a crimping stroke which may include compression of the base of the connector by the ram 18. A pressure switch initiates the return stroke stopped by a switch 72, and a safety device may prevent contact between the ram and jaws in the absence of a connector. Leaf springs 20, 22 return the jaws. Feeding of a strip of connectors along a passage 56 is by a pawl 63 on an arm turned by a handle 61. A pin 54 mounted on the ram 18 projects into the passage 56 to prevent backward movement of the strip of connectors. The machine may be secured to a crimping rail by a tapped socket.
