Abstract

1,063,437. Making electrical connections. AMP Inc. Feb. 23, 1966 [March 13, 1965], No. 10745/65. Headings B3A and B3Q. Apparatus for crimping an electrical connector (3, 4) on to a wire (W) and for testing the strength of the connection comprises a crimping device (2, 6), testing jaws (15) for gripping the wire and applying a force tending to withdraw the wire from the crimped connector, and means for releasing the jaws when the test force has reached a predetermined value. A holder (20), movable on its pivot 21 by a pneumatic motor (23), carries the pivoted jaws (15), which are closed against spring-pressure by a pneumatic cylinder (18) the piston-rod of which has a cam (16) engaging followers (17) on the jaws. Mounted on a pivot (9) is a stop member (8) against which the jaws (15) pull the connector, rotation of the stop occurring only when the predetermined test-pressure of a spring or a piston (12) against an end of the stop has been overcome. Operation.-Closure of a starting switch operates the crimping dies, shears the connector from a strip of connectors and closes the testing jaws (15) on to the wire. As the top die (6) is raised, the press-ram moves a feed-finger (7) to advance the next connected, and a microswitch is operated, starting a motor (23) in a direction to pull the crimped connector against the stop (8). If the strength of the joint is sufficient, the stop will be turned in its pivot (9) and a further micro-switch (13) operated which opens the jaws (15). The holder (20) is then returned by its motor (23) and actuates a different micro-switch (24), causing illumination of a green lamp. If the jaws pull the wire out of the connector, another micro-switch (25) is actuated, breaking the circuit of the starting switch and illuminating a red warning lamp.
