Abstract
An apparatus for assembling an electrical terminal 2 to a workpiece, e.g. a coil bobbin 4, comprises a workpiece holding fixture 32 mounted for movement past a terminal applicator 30, which is movable between a first retracted position remote from the fixture 32 and a second extended terminal assemby position, the applicator 30 having means for feeding a leading terminal of a strip of terminals past a strip shearing location for shearing the leading terminal from the strip and a clamping assembly for holding the sheared terminal to the applicator 30 for movement therewith to the second position when the workpiece holding fixture 32 is in alignment with the applicator. The coil bobbin holding fixtures 32.-Each fixture 32 is mounted on a turntable 28 via a base-plate on which is located a mandrel base 38. A mandrel 36 is adjustably mounted on the base 38 and is provided with a spring loaded member 48 for locating the bobbin 4 when loaded thereon. As the turntable 28 is rotated clockwise a fixed roller 126 engages an arm 124 of a bell crank 116 to move a connecting rod 108 radially inwardly. The rod 108 in turn moves a block 100, which moves a block 84 by means of a pin 102 and spring 104. The movement of the block 84 is transmitted to arms 82, 821 by a pin 86 to move a clamping bar 76 against the bobbin 4. At the same time the arms 82, 821 are pivoted about the pin 86 by the action of a cam slot (94) and roller (88), Fig. 7 (not shown), to lower the bar 76 into its desired clamping position relative to the bobbin. Movement of the block 100 also pivots an arm 134 about a pin 140 to bring a clamping member 130 to bear on the bobbin and hold it against a plate 131. To minimize the clamping force the member 130 is pivoted at 132 against the action of a spring 160. At an unloading station a roller 161 engages an arm 163 of the bell crank 116 to release the clamping pressure on the bobbin 4. The terminal applicators 30.-A fixed table 26 underlies the turntable 28 and the applicators 30 are mounted thereon. A support structure for each applicator comprises a base-plate 168 slidably mounted on the table 26 between guides 169. Radial adjustment of the applicator is obtained by a screw 181 and a jackscrew (182) is provided for vertical adjustment, Fig. 14 (not shown). The terminal strip is fed over a guide plate 264 into a groove 262 on a feed platform 260. A downwardly biased feed finger 274 is provided in a housing 284, the position of which is adjustable by a screw 290 A detent 292, similar to the feed finger assembly is provided to prevent withdrawal of the terminal strip with the finger 274 during an operating cycle. As a fixture 32 presents a bobbin 4 to an applicator 30, a piston and cylinder arrangement 212 is actuated to extend a piston-rod 214 thereby driving a frame block 192 via a coupling head 216, a rod 218, a pin 228 and a clevis block 226. Movement of the block 192 also causes pivotal movement of a lever 244 about the pin 228 by means of a roller 256 co-operating with a cam slot 254. The lever 244 is pivotally connected to a coupling block 234 secured to a ram plate 232, which is thereby moved downwardly. A shear member 342 of a block 340 attached to the plate 232 shears off the leading terminal in co-operation with edges of an opening 336, the connecting slug between the leading terminals falling down a shoot 338. The sheared off terminal is resiliently clamped by a spring loaded member 351 provided with a pin 352 which extends between legs (12) of the terminal and as the block 192 advances forces it to enter an aperture in the bobbin. Lances (10) formed on a leading edge portion (8) of the terminal retain it in the aperture, Fig. 2 (not shown). At the same time, the movement of the block 192 causes the feed finger assembly to move to the left by means of a toggle linkage 304, 306 and straps 296. On the return stroke of the piston-rod 214 the member 351 releases the inserted terminal and moves with the frame block 192. Compression washers 368 allow relative movement between a slide member 360 and a block 346 to allow for variations in depth of the bobbin apertures.
