Abstract
1305326 Making electrical connections AMP Inc 9 July 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 32247/71 Headings B3A and B3Q Electrical connectors 14, Fig. 4, are inserted in a flange 10 of a coil bobbin 4 and the ends of the winding are crimped into U-shaped ferrules formed on the connectors. The bobbin is placed on a fixture 22 and a piston and cylinder device 56 is actuated to drive a slide member of an inserting device 40 and a connecting rod 68 to the right, Fig. 1. The leading connectors of connector strips 15, 15<SP>1</SP> are cut off and advanced towards the bobbin, while the rod 68 actuates a toggle mechanism to drive the bobbin leftward, thereby inserting the connectors in the bobbin flange. During this portion of the work cycle, arms 24, 24<SP>1</SP> are pivoted outwardly as pins 170, 170<SP>1</SP> ride up convergent portions 160, 160<SP>1</SP> of latch arms 156, 156<SP>1</SP> and lodge in front of shoulders 162, 162<SP>1</SP>. Tap wires 34, 34<SP>1</SP> from the bobbin are placed in notches 26, 26<SP>1</SP> in the arms. The connecting rod 68 is then retracted and the bobbin support moves to the right, Fig. 1, but the shoulders 162, 162<SP>1</SP> prevent movement of the arms 24, 24<SP>1</SP> and their ends pivot inwardly as their pivot pin 25 moves with the bobbin. The arms place the tap wires above the connector ferrules, which rest on anvils 28, 28<SP>1</SP>, and a die plate 32 is driven downwardly to crimp the ferrules about the tap wires. Slight elongation of the ferrule takes place during crimping and this is accommodated by providing a gap (151) between a slide member (136) and a retainer plate (144) on a main slide (80), Fig. 10 (not shown), to allow for movement of the member (136). As the die plate 32 moves downwardly it engages ears 166, (166<SP>1</SP>) on the arms 156, 156<SP>1</SP> pivoting them outwardly until the shoulders 162, 162<SP>1</SP> clear the pins 170, 1701, and springs (155), (155<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 13 (not shown), then cause the arms 24, 24<SP>1</SP> to pivot outwardly, to the position shown in Fig. 4. As the die plate moves upwardly the parts return to their original positions and the coil bobbin is removed from the fixture. The connectors are then bent manually to lie spaced from the winding.
