Abstract

1381830 Making electrical connections; jointing by stamping AMP Inc 11 July 1973 [21 July 1972] 32972/73 Headings B3A and B3Q In apparatus for crimping wires to electrical terminals on a carrier belt fed by a sprocket, the sprocket and an indexing cam therefor are carried by a shaft mounted on a slide which is movable for stripping the belt from the leading terminal after this has been crimped to a wire and while the wire is held against movement, e.g. by a lead-making machine. In the example the apparatus includes a ram (32), Fig. 2 (not shown), guided in a housing (28) and coupled to the ram (37) of a press, the ram (32) mounting crimping dies 38, 40, Fig. 4, co-operating with anvils 46, 48. The sprocket-slide 54 is movable in a track 56, Fig. 5B, by a lever 104 which is mounted in a bearing 109, Fig. 7, and connected at its upper end by a pin 112 to a lever 114. Lever 114 is turned about its pivot 116 by a pin 118 on a cam follower 122, 124 engaging a cam 123 on the ram (32). A stationary follower 76 engaging the cam 72 on the sprocket-shaft 63, turns the shaft through half of an indexing step upon rightward stripping movement of the slide 54 and completes the indexing step when the slide is returned to the left to position the next terminal between the dies and anvils. The slide 54 is biased to the right by springs 94, and a further spring 140 acts on a shoe 134 for pressing the belt 1 against the sprocket 18. A guide-plate (145), Fig. 6 (not shown), locates the belt as it leaves the sprocket and a further guide 127 is mounted on the slide part 100 and projects forwardly of the shoe 134. The shaft 63 can be turned by a knob 92 to introduce a new belt.
