Abstract

1490281 Jointing by stamping ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 16 Jan 1975 [18 Jan 1974] 1922/75 Headings B3Q and B3A Terminal connectors (11), Fig. 1 (not shown), are crimped to wire conductors between upper and lower dies 32, 34, 36 in apparatus comprising a finger 70 for guiding a strip of terminals fed along a side or back platform 18 by a reciprocable feed finger 54, the finger being pivoted at 56 to a feed plate 48 which is pivoted at 52 to the frame of the apparatus and is turned about the pivot by a link 44 pivoted at one end to the plate 48 and at the other to a ram 22 carrying the dies 32, 34. A number of different pivot holes are provided in the plate 48 for varying the feed stroke. In Fig. 2 the plate 48 is mounted for manual operation of the apparatus so that the feed finger 54 is withdrawn during down strokes of the ram. If the ram is connected by its top 12 to a press for automatic operation, the pivots are re-positioned, Fig. 13 (not shown), to give feed strokes during down strokes of the ram. The feed finger 54 engages the barrel of the leading connector and telescopes, against the action of a spring 54c, when its end contacts a feed-stop L1 or (Fig. 13) the leading legs of the die 34. The feed finger is pressed down by a coil or leaf spring (58), Fig. 1 (not shown), and the guide finger 70, in the form of a bell-crank lever, by a spring 66. The feed finger acts as a stop for wire (A), Fig. 4 (not shown), inserted in a terminal and includes a target T to facilitate insertion of a wire. The pivot pins 50, 52, 56 are locked by spring-loaded ball bearings (80), Fig. 3 (not shown). Shearing.-A blade 72 on the ram co-operates with a lower die, waste falling through an opening in the die. If shearing occurs during a feed stroke (Fig. 13), the blade 72 passes through an opening in the feed finger (90). Stroke adjustment for the two dies 32, 34 is by indexable discs 26, 28, each having a number of lower surfaces 26a-26d, 28a-28d, Figs. 6, 7 and 10, at different levels through which force applied to the ram is transmitted, through intermediate members 38, 40, to the dies. Indexing pockets 27, 29 in the discs 26, 28 are engaged by spring-pressed pins or balls 82, 84.
