Abstract
1315501 Making electrical connections; stamping; shearing BURNDY CORP 5 May 1970 21605/70 Headings B3A B3Q and B3W Apparatus comprises a finger 58, Fig. 15, for feeding a workpiece 12 to a die 71, and a surface 71a on the die for controlling movement of the finger. As shown, a strip of connectors 12 is fed between co-acting crimping dies 71, 76 where the connectors are crimped to conductors before being fed beyond a slot cutter 83 which severs the leading connector from the strip. Drives.-A crankshaft 24, Fig. 2, for operating the upper die is driven, through a pulley 22 and a one-revolution clutch 21, by an electromotor, a brake 125, 126 on the shaft being controlled by a cam 131. Feed mechanisms.-A slide 54, Fig. 15, carrying the finger 58 on a pivot 59 is operated by a lever 49, Fig. 2, which is advanced, against the influence of a return spring 55, by a plunger 44. The plunger is advanced, against the influence of a return spring 45, by a catch 40 which engages a pin 43 on the plunger and is operated by a lever 38. This is connected to a strut 32, which is operated by a cam 28 and lever 29, and is arranged to telescope when the feed finger is stopped by contact with the surface 71a. A spring 60, Fig. 15, turns the finger anti-clockwise about its pivot 59, so that it may reach up to the connectors 12, when a follower 62 on the finger passes beyond a cam 63 which is adjustable to determine the start of the effective feed stroke. The feed slide may be returned by spring 55 if a crank 114, Fig. 2, is turned by a lever 115 so as to free the catch 40 from the pin 43. The crank 114 also operates a switch for stopping the press and a detent for locking the press-casing so that this cannot be removed until the press has been stopped. Work - guiding. - A spring - pressed channel member 100, Fig. 15 and Fig. 13 (not shown), presses the connectors 12 against a base 101. Dies; shearing.-The upper die 76 has an internal sliding part 77, Fig. 5, controlled by an adjustable abutment 78 and may be stamped with information required for setting the cam 63. The slot cutter comprises a pivoted upper blade 83 operated by a cam 91 on the press-ram 27. The cam rotates a bell-crank lever 87 mounting an abutment 85 bearing on the blade 83. A handle 95 may free the abutment from the blade for replacement of the cutter unit. The blade 83 is raised by a spring and an abutment (93), Fig. 3 (not shown), which engages beneath a finger 82a on the blade.
