Abstract

915,566. Making electrical connections; Jointing by stamping. AMP Inc. Aug. 9, 1961 [Aug. 10, 1960], No. 27704/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of splicing wires to leads extending from opposite sides of electrical components, the components are fed into position with each lead resting in a U- shaped electrical connector, a wire is laid in each connector parallel with the lead and the connector simultaneously crimped about the wires and leads. A machine for carrying out this operation comprises a reciprocating ram 14 which drives a pair of feed fingers 18 and to which are mounted pairs of dies 20, depressors 22, a plate 24 carrying a manual feed mechanism 26, a mechanism 28 and a feed mechanism 30 for a connector strip 10. The mechanism 26 comprises a block 34 carrying a spring-loaded slide 36 retained by a bolt 40 and a stirrup 42 and to which is secured a finger-piece 46. The mechanism 28 comprises a well 48 in which is mounted a spring-loaded double-ended anvil 50 and a pair of shear members 52 retained and limited in operation by keys 56. The mechanism 30 comprises a plate 68, a spacer bar 70 and spring-loaded holddown plates 72 having slots through which the pins 76 of the fingers 18 engage the holes 12 of the connector strip 10. In operation, with a pair of connector strips 10 in position the finger-piece 46 is moved forward to feed the leads 4 of a pre-positioned component 6 into the U-shaped connector 8, pieces of wire 2 are positioned in the notches 58 of the members 52 so that the ends engage the connector, and the press operated. As the ram descends the dies 20 crimp the connectors about the leads and wires and the depressor 22 operates the shear member 52 to shear the connector 8 and the strip along the lines A-A, B-B. As the ram 14 ascends the pins 76 engage the holes 12 of the strips 10 to feed them between the plates 68, 72 whilst the assembled component is stripped from the dies 20. In a modification the components 6 may be fed from a magazine 78 mounted above the plate 68. A hole 88 in a reciprocating plate 80 operated by the feed finger 18 from a link 82 is aligned with the magazine aperture to release one component per cycle to the connectors. In a further modification, the components may be fed by means of a sloping ramp positioned opposite to the feed fingers 18 and a manually-operated stop.
