Abstract

1431081 Spray-producers; mixing apparatus HUDSON OXYGEN THERAPY SALES CO 5 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 26858/73 Headings B1C and B2F [Also in Divisions A5 and F2] An atomiser, or nebuliser, comprises a cap 14 which is part of a manifold, and a jar 16 which is preferably threaded to be received into the cap, and has a bottom 62 with an integral air nozzle 44 having an interior 43 through which gas is upwardly directed. At the nozzle apex is an orifice 49 and the nozzle 44 is frusto-conically shaped. An aspirator cap 42 is disposed coaxially on the nozzle 44, its bottom surface 55 being slightly elevated off the bowl 62 to provide a passage for water or medicament. Alternatively, the surface 55 may seat on bowl 62 with passageways formed through its lower end. At the upper end of cap 42 is an orifice 47 in line with orifice 49. The interior of the aspirator cap is cut to provide four flattened surfaces which rest on the exterior of nozzle 44, Fig. 12 (not shown), to form channels 53 between the nozzle 44 and the cap 42, so that fluids can be drawn up the channels to mixing chamber 51 between orifices 47 and 49. In an alternative form the interior of the aspirator cap may be cylindrical and the exterior of the nozzle surface bevelled to produce channels. Gas supplied via line 52 to nozzle 44 creates a depression on emerging from nozzle 49, drawing liquid upwardly within channels 53 into chamber 51 so that a mist impinges on baffle 46 which breaks up the droplets further. The baffle 46 comprises a body having a plurality of arms 40 flanged inwardly at 59 for attachment to the exterior of cap 42. To achieve the preferred range of particle sizes the nozzle orifice diameter should lie between 0.030 and 0.032 inches and the aspirator orifice should lie between 0.041 and 0.043 inches. The distance 'between the upper edge of the nozzle orifice and the lower edge of the aspirator cap orifice should be greater than the diameter of either orifice, and preferably twice the diameter of the aspirator cap orifice.
