Abstract

1430983 Portable containers GPG HOLDINGS Ltd and THERMO PLASTICS Ltd 15 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 23067/73 Heading B8D [Also in Division B5] A plastics drum comprises a blow-moulded thermoplastics body part 1 having a mouthdefining upper portion of S-shaped corrugated form providing an inwardly-directed annular protuberance 3 spaced below an inwardly-directed lip 4 to define an internal annular groove 5 and an injection-moulded end closure incorporating a bunghole 16 and having external flange portions 11,12 and a skirt 7 together defining an annular recess 8, the flange portions 11 12 and the protuberance 3 respectively locating in the groove 5 and recess 8. The end closure is secured in position by inserting the closure into the mouth of the blow-moulded body part whilst the latter is still at elevated temperature, and cooling the body part so that it shrinks on to the closure. The end closure is also provided with an upper flat-topped flange 13, which facilitates stacking and which defines with the flange portion 12 a groove 9. A sealing ring is located in the groove and is sealingly compressed by the lip 4 on shrinkage of the body part. The flange portions 11, 12 are interconnected by bridging ribs 15. The two part drum construction is said to prevent variation in wall thickness and bunghole dimensions as compared to integrallymoulded drums.
