Abstract

1,165,996. Container closures. METAL CONTAINERS Ltd. 5 Jan., 1968 [10 Feb., 1967], No. 6582/67. Heading B8T. An open-ended shipping container 11, e.g. of thermoplastic material, metal or fibre board, has a circumferential external groove 13 in its wall 12 adjacent to the open end, corresponding with an internal rib 14. A lid of thermoplastic material comprises a flat central portion 16 surrounded by a channel section rim 17 whose outer wall 18 engages the outer surface of the extremity 19 of the container wall 12. An inner wall 20 of the rim 17 tightly engages the rib 14 forming a liquid- and dusttight seal. A clamping ring 21 is applied by known means, bending an initially vertical extremity 22 of the outer wall 18, which may be slotted for increased flexibility, into close contact with the outer wall of the container, a thickened bead 23 preventing the cover 15 from slipping away under the clamping ring 21. The flat central portion 16, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), of the cover 15 may be joined to the rim 17 at different levels, enabling different degrees of resilience of the wall 20 to be chosen to suit varying materials and manufacturing tolerances.
