Abstract
1430114 Two part coupling INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 14 June 1973 [3 July 1972 11 Dec 1972] 28266/73 Heading H2E To connect to an individual pin of a semiconductor device, either round or flat, a socket connector 10 comprises channel shaped yoke 11 extended in opposing arms 12, 13 terminating in cylindrically curved contact surfaces 15 with their axes of curvature perpendicular to the axis of the engaging pin 16. At the opposite end a thin supporting stem 14 with wiring tag provides lateral compliance at the contact zone some six times greater than that of either contact, to allow self alignment or "floating". Engagement may be by direct insertion with low longitudinal force, or by insertion alongside the connector with subsequent cammed sideways shift into contact, preferably from the direction shown, while the connector is restrained by its housing. Spring rates of the order of 30 gmf./À001 inch are recommended for each contact, 5 for alignment and 1À5 for sealing compliance (Fig. 6, not shown). Formulae are quoted for approximate calculation of these rates from dimensions and elasticity of the metal. In connector modules sockets may be pitched at as little as 0À05 inch.
