Abstract

1429215 Linear particle accelerators C.G.R.- MEV 6 July 1973 [7 July 1972] 32358/73 Heading HID A linear accelerating structure comprises a sequence of cylindrical resonant cavities a 1 , b 1 , a 2 , b 2 , and a corresponding sequence of coaxially arranged annular cavities c 1 , c 2 disposed around the periphery of the cylindrical cavities and each coupled to an associated pair of adjacent cylindrical cavities. In the embodiment of Fig. 6, adjacent cavities a 1 , b 1 are coupled, via apertures s 1 , t 1 , through the annular cavity c 1 , while the alternate pair of cylindrical cavities b 1 , a 2 are coupled by apertures u 1 , v 1 in their common wall, direct coupling between cavities c 1 and a 2 being prevented by staggering the apertures u 1 , v 1 with respect to the apertures s 1 , t 1 (Fig. 7, not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 11, which is made up of a sequence of identical structural components, every adjacent pair of cylindrical cavities is coupled by an annular cavity, and the cylindrical cavity common walls possess no coupling apertures. The annular cavities may have three re-entrant portions (Figs. 12 and 14, not shown), rather then the two exhibited in Figs. 6 and 11, and the coupling apertures s and t, instead of, as shown, being near the ends of the annular cavities, may be near their centres, and obliquely directed through the cylindrical cavity common walls (Fig. 13, not shown). The cylindrical cavities and the annular cavities may be provided with plunger tuning means (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown). Standing wave operation of the accelerating structure is referred to, and data on relative dimensions are given.
