Abstract

1,241,319. Linear particle accelerators. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 23 Oct., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 50277/68. Heading H1D. In a linear accelerator in which charged particles are accelerated nearly to the velocity of light in a resonant accelerator section 2 having a plurality of coupled cavity resonators 3, the first cavity 3<SP>1</SP> is so designed that the particle beam from the gun 5 is injected at a position of maximum electric field intensity in order to improve the bunching of the beam and to allow the use of lower injection voltages. The upstream wall 21 of the injection cavity 3<SP>1</SP> is placed at a position corresponding to the midplane of a standard cavity and is planar and provided with a beam entrance hole as small as possible in order to act as a reflecting plane. The beam entrance hole may have a diameter of 2 mm. and the beam exit hole of the cavity 3<SP>1</SP> a diameter of 10 mm. The cavities 3 are intercoupled by a plurality of off-axis cavities 15. The accelerator section 2 is excited from a microwave source 9 connected into the centre of the section through a waveguide 11. The beam current may be varied by varying the voltage between the beam source and the accelerating electrode which is also the wall 21.
