Abstract

1429084 Compressors WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 4 June 1973 [19 June 1972] 26450/73 Heading F1N [Also in Division F4] A multiple refrigerant-compressor system comprises first and second hermetic-shell type compressors 1, 2; the first compressor 1 being adapted to run continuously and the second to be cycled on and off. The system also includes suction line inlets 12, 15 for the compressors, each inlet having a filter 13, 16 with the inlet 15 extending from within the shell of first compressor 1; high pressure discharge outlets 18, 21 for the compressors connected in parallel; and an oil equalizing conduit 30 communicating with the shells of the two compressors. The conduit 30 is disposed at a height corresponding to the minimum oil level desired in the first compressor when both compressors are running. When the second compressor is not running, a heater 40 is used to heat the oil and drive off entrained refrigerant. When the system is operating at full capacity with both compressors 1 and 2 running, suction gas for the compressor 1 is drawn through conduit 12 while suction gas for the compressor 2 is drawn through both conduits 12 and 15. At reduced capacity, the compressor 2 is cycled off. In this case, the suction gas is drawn through conduit 12 only, there being no flow of suction gas through conduit 15.
