Abstract
1429050 Compressors WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 25 June 1973 [17 July 1972] 30070/73 Heading F1N [Also in Division F4] A variable capacity refrigerant compressor system, comprises first and second refrigerant compressors 10, 20 of the hermetic shell type, the first compressor 10 being intended to run continuously and the second to be cycled on and off. The system also includes suction inlets 11, 21 for each compressor, the inlet 21 extending from within the compressor 1, discharge outlet ports 12, 13 and 22 connected in parallel to a main outlet port 30, and a by-pass line 33 having a solenoid valve 34. A check valve 31 is interposed between line 30 and port 22 to prevent the high gas pressure in the line 30, when only compressor 10 is running, from feeding back to the port 22. The first compressor is preferably a multiplecylinder compressor having unloading means for controllably unloading some of the cylinders, and is adapted to be always running either fully loaded or part-unloaded. The discharge port 12 is connected to the cylinders that cannot be unloaded, and the discharge port 13 is connected to the cylinders that can be unloaded. Valve 34 is controlled to be closed when compressor 20 is running thus preventing high pressure gas in the port 22 from by-passing back into the suction inlet 21; and to be opened when compressor 20 is not running so that any leakage past the check valve 31 will be returned to the port 21 without building up a pressure in port 22. A capacity control logic switch is provided to control the operation of the system.
