Abstract

1427985 Baling NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 16 July 1974 [27 April 1973] 20170/73 Heading B5F An apparatus for compressing material comprises conveying surfaces A-D arranged to define a tapering elongate conduit open only at its two ends. In one embodiment, two pairs of opposed endless belts A-D are arranged to form a square conduit by positioning the belts in each pair such that their longitudinal centre lines 22A, 22C are inclined to each other and such that they converge towards each other at an included angle of 20 degrees. The angle α between adjacent belts may be set such that the shape of the conduit changes along its length apart from the reduction in area. One belt of each opposed pair may be driven at a different speed, and possibly in the opposite direction, from the other belt to rotate the material being compressed, e.g. grass, straw, &c.
