Abstract
1427850 Resistors ALLEN-BRADLEY CO 16 Jan 1974 [4 April 1973] 01945/74 Heading H1S A resistor comprises an insulating cylindrical core 3, e.g. of alumina, with a resistance layer 2 of cermet material and conductive end layers 5 which preferably comprise a silver, palladium and glass mix. Connecting wires 7 each comprise a shank 10, which is coated with a low melting-point solder, e.g. 60% lead, 40% tin, for connection to external circuitry, and a collar 9 and a knurled head portion 8 which are initially coated with a second higher melting- point solder, e.g. 90% lead, 10% tin, which is used to connect wires 7 to end layers 5. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, the end layers 5 are applied first and the cerment layer 2 is then fired on. The value of the resistance is then adjusted by cutting a helical groove in the layer 2 and a layer of glaze 6 may then be provided. The wires 7 are then positioned and soldered on by mounting the resistor between two arms of a jig (15, Fig. 4, not shown) and heating the second solder with heat lamps (20), the shanks 10 being kept relatively cool to prevent melting of the first solder. A coating 23 of copolymerized epoxy resin and phenolic resin is then applied. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the cermet layer is applied before the end layers 5, which may contain no palladium. In addition to a copolymerized resin coating, this resistor has an outer epoxy jacket 31.
