Abstract

1426593 Photographic colour diffusion transfer material POLAROID CORP 16 April 1973 [24 April 1972] 18134/73 Heading G2C A photographic diffusion transfer material comprises at least one silver halide layer having dye image-providing material associated therewith and/ or a dyeable stratum and comprises also a neutralizing layer, a spacer layer, an aqueous alkaline processing composition and means for spreading the processing composition through the material in a position such that the processing composition passes through the spacer layer to reach the neutralizing layer, the spacer layer comprising a continuous matrix of synthetic polymeric material that is impermeable to processing composition and that has been obtained from an aqueous dispersion of the polymeric material and as a discontinuous phase within the matrix a material which is permeable to the processing composition. The permeable material may have increased permeability to alkali at increased temperatures and may comprise polyacrylamide, isopropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, acrylonitrile-acrylic acid copolymer, methacrylate-acrylic acid copolymer, poly-N-ethyl-acrylamide, polyethylene oxide, terpolymer of N-ethyl-acrylamide, methacrylamide and acrylamide, N-ethyl-acrylamide-2-vinylpyridine copolymer, N-isopropyl-acrylamide N-vinylpyrrolidone copolymer or N-isopropylacrylamide dimethylaminoethyl acrylate copolymer. The dispersion from which the continuous matrix is prepared may have a particle size of 0À095Á-0À130Á. The ratio of the material of the continuous matrix to the material of the discontinuous phase in the spacer layer may be 19:1 to 99:1. The spacer layer may contain 300-1700 mg solid per square foot surface area. The material may be an integral negative-positive material. The continuous phase may comprise 60-38-2 copolymer of methyl methacrylate, butylacrylate and acrylic acid, 60-30-4-6 copolymer of butyl acrylate, diacetone acrylamide, styrene and methacrylic acid, 60-30- 4-6-1À5-0À5 copolymer of butyl acrylate, diacetone acrylamide, styrene, methacrylic acid, 2- sulphoethyl methacrylate and divinyl benzene, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl-chloride vinyl acetate copolymer, or a terpolymer of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and acrylic or methacrylic acid.
