Abstract
1424898 Metallic foams TECHNICAL OPERATIONS BASEL SA 19 Dec 1973 58809/73 Heading C7X Metallic foam material is made by introducing molten metal, refractory particles and a blowing agent into a stationary elongate hollow body which has an opening at each end and which is arranged with its axis at an angle to the horizontal the, body being provided internally with at least three baffles; the ingredients are introduced at such a rate that the hollow body is not entirely filled in the region of the baffles, and the mixed contents are poured into a mould. The hollow body may be vertical or inclined, Figs. 2-4 (not shown). In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 1, two hollow bodies 1, 21 are mounted, one above the other, and are each provided with helical baffles 3, 23. Aluminium/magnesium alloy 5 and granular titanium hydride 7 are mixed in the upper body 1 at a temperature at which the hydride is stable; molten aluminium 13 and pieces of steel wire 15 are added to the lower body 21 together with the pre-mix product 11. The temperature in body 21 is above the decomposition temperature of the blowing agent; thus foaming commences, and is then completed in mould 34. An alternative blowing agent is zirconium hydride; it is also possible to include two separate substances which react together e.g. carbon and iron oxide to provide gaseous oxides of carbon.
