Abstract

901,917. Casting processes. FIEDLER, W. S. Jan. 4, 1960 [Jan. 5, 1959], No. 263/60. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group II] Metal foam is continuously produced by mixing a gas-releasing agent with molten metal to be foamed, feeding the mixture on to or into a moving member before more than 25% of the gas has been released, moving the member at a temperature and for a time such that the metal attains its optimum foam volume and solidifying the resultant foam. As shown in Fig. 1, metal to be foamed is supplied from a furnace 5 and liquid or molten gas-releasing agent is supplied from a reservoir 14 to a vessel 12 where they are mixed. The mixture is then rapidly fed on to a moving belt 20 and passed through an oven 21 where foaming takes place. The foam solidifies on emerging from the oven. The vessel 12 may be pressurized to suppress foaming therein. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 2, metal to be foamed is supplied to a vessel 36 and gas-releasing agent, in the form of zirconium hydride and alumium powders contained within an aluminium tube 37, added. After violent agitation the mixture is fed into moving moulds 45 which pass through an oven 46 where the foam attains its optimum volume. In both embodiments, the oven may be dispensed with if foaming is rapid or the heat capacity of the moulds is sufficiently high. Metals which can be foamed are Co, Ni, Cn, Ti, Zr, Nb, Zn, Li, Al, Mg, Fe and their alloys. Metals melting below 1200‹ C. are preferably foamed using metal hydrides as gas-releasing agents and metals melting above 1200‹ C. are preferably foamed using metals having a boiling-point below 1150‹ C. as gas-releasing agents. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 729,339 and 811,814.
