Abstract

1423306 Strapping machine F A POWER Ltd 28 Feb 1974 [8 March 1973] 11375/73 Heading B8C In a strapping machine having means for feeding a plastics band in a loop around an article, means for tensioning the band about the article and means for heating overlapping portions of the band, a reciprocable plunger 21 co-operates with a cutting plate 34 to sever the loop from the stock of band material at a location which will be at the edge of a heat seal joint, after heating of the overlapping portions and prior to compression, by the plunger 21, of the hot overlapping portions to form the heat seal joint. The plunger 21 is moved to compress the overlapping portions by a cam (16, Fig. 1, not shown) or a piston and cylinder assembly (60, Fig. 6, not shown) acting through a member 13. A spring 38 provides a lost motion connection between the plunger 21 and the member 13. A track spacer (46, Fig. 3, not shown) which can occupy a position between the overlapping portions of the band as the band is fed, is retractable from this position to allow a heater plate 49 to move between the overlapping portions. The plunger 21 presses the overlapping band portions against the heater plate 49. The plunger 21 has a rectangular transverse cross-section and includes two opposite cutting edges at each of its ends.
