Abstract

1391184 Cutting apparatus; seaming non-metallic sheet material AMERICAN VELCRO Inc 24 March 1972 [16 April 1971] 13785/72 Headings B4B and B5N [Also in Division B8] In a method of, and apparatus for cutting a web into successive lengths, the web is held at a location remote from its leading end by feed means which is advanced so as to move the leading end past a cutting zone, the end is secured in this position whilst the feed means is retracted, the feed means still engaging the web so as to tension and flatten it, and the flattened web is notched and cut to a desired length. The apparatus may be for cutting portions from a hook and loop fastener tape 19 and heat sealing them on to a second web, heat sealable adhesive being applied to the tape 19 before it enters a reciprocable feed shoe 33. The web is held in the shoe by a plunger 39 whilst the shoe is moved towards a cutting station 12. A clamp 45 has teeth which pass through a bifurcated portion of the shoe to engage the tape downstream of cutting dies at station 12 before the shoe is retracted. Opposite edges of the flattened tape are notched by dies 68, (69), Fig. 8 (not shown), mounted on a reciprocable yoke 54, an abutment 54b of which then engages a cutting die 71 to urge it against spring bias to cut the tape across the notches. Die 71 and a stationary die 70 are located by rollers 56, 57 on the yoke 54. The cut out notch pieces are removed from below by a vacuum disposal means 81. The cut portion is held on a reciprocable vacuum head 92 and fed beneath a heat sealing member 114 on which it is held, again by vacuum. This member lasers the portion on to a web fed transversely across a heated apertured plate. Lamps beneath the plate facilitate correct positioning of the portion which is pressed against the heated web. An air cylinder (120), Fig. 2 (not shown) which causes this movement of the member 114 is controlled by two limit switches (125), (135) which lower the member by application of a low pressure and press it against the apertured plate at a high pressure. The vacuum applied by the member 114 may serve to cool the portion. The feed length of the shoe 33 is adjustable. All the movable members are actuated by air cylinders controlled by switches associated with a multiple cam.
