950,854. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. JOHN WADDINGTON Ltd., and E. DODSWORTH. Sept. 7, 1960 [June 10, 1959], No. 19822/59. Heading B5K. A method of heat sealing thermoplastic materials comprises interposing a plate I between the material 2 to be sealed and a heated element (or die) 3 during the sealing but which is separated therefrom on completion of the sealing. The plate 1 is held by a spindle 4 slidably held in a bush 5 in the die 3 against the pressure of a spring 6. The reciprocable die 3 and the plate 1 move towards the material 2 until the plate makes contact therewith and the die continues to advance, compressing the spring 6, until it engages the plate 1 and transmits heat thereto to effect the seal. On withdrawal of the die the spring 6 moves the plate 1 from the die and heat is quickly dissipated therefrom. Alternatively the plate may be supported from the die counterpart or mould by spring means. In a modification (not shown) the plate moves to and fro through an angle of 90 degrees to the die so as to be interposed between the die 3 and material 2 when desired.
