Abstract

1,225,992. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. SIGNODE CORP. 10 April, 1968 [10. April, 1967], No. 17311/68. Heading B5K, [Also in Division B8] In a machine for strapping articles, ends 20a, 20b of a thermoplastics loop 20 passing around an article are friction welded together. Jaws 128, 144 are raised to grip the strap ends by means of a follower 106 in a cam track 98 in cam 96 acting through toggle linkage 114, 116, 132, 134. During this movement, a separating plate 46 is pivoted clear of the strap ends by a toggle plate 104 engaging a projection 118 on the plate 46, Fig. 11. The jaw 144 acting with a cutter 42 severs the strap, and during its upward movement, Fig. 17, the jaw 128 grips the straps against an upper jaw 50. Pins 109, 111 of the toggle linkage are spring biased against an anchor plate to control the pressure on the straps and the upper jaw 50 is vibrated by the action of a rotating eccentric 172 causing the upper end of the strap 20a to rub against the lower one 20b to fuse the contacting surfaces. A brief period is allowed for solidification after the rubbing has ceased, before the vibrator is pivoted clear of the straps about an axis 182, Fig. 9, by a cam follower 180 engaging a notch in the reverse face of the cam 96.
