Abstract

1422190 Needle N G HERR 30 July 1973 [4 Aug 1972] 36144/73 Heading D1G [Also in Division F2] A needle, Fig. 3, has lateral grooves or bores 36, 34 and an 'eye' 28 opening to the side of the needle so that a filament 30, threaded as shown, will not contact the work as the needle penetrates it. A lateral groove 42 assists the action of a loop engaging hook (46, Fig. 7 not shown). The needle may be curved and may be of metal or plastics and the edges 16, 18 may constitute cutting edges. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, the edges 62a, 62b of the groove 60 may be sharpened so that the filament may be severed when required. This arrangement is particularly suitable for use as a surgical suture. The needles may be employed manually or in a machine.
