1314649 Tufting W E PASSONS and W R REESE 13 Oct 1971 [20 May 1970] 47569/71 Heading DIG A tufting machine has means spreading the loop of a tuft so that the loop may be cut centrally. The looper 22 is provided with a spreader element 25 comprising a spreader blade 28 secured by a screw 29 to the side of the looper 22 remote from the needle, the arms 39, 40 of the loop being separated as the looper and blade enter therebetween. A knife 32 then rises between blade and looper bill to sever the loop centrally. The lower edges of the blade and looper may be aligned or the former may be above the latter. The blade may be engaged by the knife and spread away from the looper bill. It is stated that the applicants had previously attempted cutting the loop, held by a hook, on opposite sides of the hook in two places at uniform depth, to avoid a J-cut loop.
