In use, the upper end of tube 44 presses against shoulder 96, to hold valve mechanism 136 in a raised position, in which member 140 engages its seat 144 and members 72 and 74 are clear of their seats 76 and 78, respectively. On withdrawing tube 44 from bore 90, spring 154 lowers the valve mechanism into the position shown, in which the seated members 72 and 74 close the inlet 50 and outlet 52 respectively. The optional by-pass duct 152 is opened, as member 140 is moved clear of its seat 144. In another form (Figs. 1-5, not shown), the by-pass duct is omitted.
