1421673 Rolling tubes G I GULYAEV, J N NEZNAMOV A I NECHIPORENKO V Y OSTRENKO P I KUTSENKO V K KURILENKO I V ERMOLOV A I CHEKMAREV V G VORONKO I P BOIKO V R MAMONTOV J I PUSTOVOICHENKO G M VOLOVIK V G ZAKHARENKO and VÀP PASCHENKO 8 Jan 1974 00866/74 Heading B3M [Also in Divisions G2-G3] A control system for a rolling mill stand producing tubes of constant internal diameter with thinned ends includes a drive arrangement for displacing the rolls to increase the clearance between the rolls when rolling the front end of the tube and decrease the clearance when rolling the rear end. A typical installation is shown in Fig. 1 where ingots are brought to a piercing mill 2 from a furnace 1 and after piercing are delivered by an inclined grate to a longitudinal mill 3 which includes a receiving trough 27, see Fig. 2. The mill rolls have round grooves 5, 51 and the upper roll 5 can be displaced by hydraulic ram arrangement 15 to vary the clearance between the rolls. Rollers 28 are provided for returning the tube to trough 27 on an idle pass when rolls 5 are moved apart and the tube can then be rotated through 90 degrees for a further pass to be made. The hydraulic fluid flow to rams 15 is controlled by electromagnetic valves 41, 42 energized from the drive engaging unit 44 shown in Fig. 5. The mill stand is provided with a tube end sensor 43, roll position sensors 50, 51 and a load sensor 52 which provide signals for use in the control system. The tube end sensor, as shown, includes two sensing elements 54, 55 which enables the front and rear ends of the tube to be identified. Additionally the length of the thinned end portion can be controlled by unit 46 which controls the speed of displacement of the roll 5 and unit 48 provides a delay. A clock pulse generator 56 is used to provide a length calibration and a pass number sensor 53 also is provided. In operation the rolls are driven to the minimum clearance position and retained there until the tube end enters the roll which is predetermined from sensor 43 and delay 45 and confirmed by load sensor 52 when the rolls are driven apart to roll a taper on the end of the tube. The cylindrical part of the tube is rolled with the rolls at the required spacing until the rear end of the tube is sensed when, after a delay, the rolls are driven to the minimum clearance position to provide the rear end taper. After two passes the tube moves to the oblique roll mill 6 which has the clearance between the rolls varied in a similar manner to that of mill 3. A roller conveyer 12 transfers the tube to reheating furnace 7 and stretch reducing mill 8.
