Abstract
1421050 Glass to metal seals PLESSEY CO Ltd 3 May 1974 [18 Oct 1973] 48606/73 Heading C1M In the manufacture of a metal-glass-metal seal, the glass having a linear coefficient of thermal expansion in the range 4À7 Î 10<SP>-6</SP> to 5À1 Î 10<SP>-6</SP> per degree Centigrade and at least one of the metals comprising tantalum, a metal cup 2 with a central hole 3 in a recess 4 has a metal wire 1 extending therethrough with a glass bead 14 thereover, the glass and metal parts being heated to form the seal in an inert atmosphere to a temperature in the range 900‹ to 1400‹ C. The cup 2 is supported on a carbon block 6 shaped at 7 and 8 to receive the cup 2 and wire 1 respectively. Tantalum or an alloy of tantalum with 2% tungsten may be used for both wire and cup or the cup 2 may be of a nickel-cobalt-iron alloy. Glasses suggested are a borosilicate or an alkali barium silicate glass. To form an electrotylic capacitor, the edge 5 of the cup 2 is soldered to an open can (11) which may also be of Ta or Ta alloy or of silver for sealing to the nickelcobalt-iron alloy.
