Abstract

1344565 Sealing glass to metals and ceramic material GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 23 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 24170/72 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] A method of making a metallic casing for a sodium-sulphur cell comprises placing a glass ring 17 on either side of a solid crystalline ionconductive electrolyte 16, e.g. sodium betaalumina, and placing on the rings respectively, an anode casing part 12 of nickel or Fe-Ni-Co alloy and a cathode casing part 13 of niobium or tantalum. The glass of the rings 17 is selected to have a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of the electrolyte 16 and suitable glasses are described. The assembly is heated in an inert atmosphere at 1000‹ C. for one minute to produce helium leak-tight joints. The casing parts 12, 13 are filled, respectively, with anode and cathode material through tubes 14, 15 which are thereafter sealed.
