Abstract

1,180,777. Glass - - to - metal seals. ISOTRONICS Inc. 27 Nov., 1967, No. 53747/67. Heading C1M. An hermetic seal component, especially for use with capacitors, comprises a terminal of tantalum or niobium extending through a mass of glass fused thereto and forming a positive meniscus with respect to the terminal, the glass having a coefficient of expansion greater than that of the metal of the terminal, the surface of the metal terminal being substantially free of any oxide so that after assembly of the seal an electrolytic oxide may be formed thereon. Preferably the glass has a coefficient of expansion of 9 x 10<-6>/‹ C. In the preferred form of the invention the seal component is also sealed into a metal eyelet, of silver or silver-clad steel or stainless steel, the metal of the eyelet having a coefficient of expansion at least as great as that of the glass. If desired, the eyelet may be very thin so that it follows the expansion and contraction characteristics of the glass to which it is bonded. To obtain a good hermetic seal the components are heated to a temperature of 1900‹ F. in an inert atmosphere, and after cooling to room temperature in that atmosphere an oxide is electrolytically formed on the metal terminal at the glass-terminal interface. A suitable sealing glass is a potash-soda-lead or metallic-oxide type.
