Abstract
1,228,529. Foil metal to glass seal. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 25 April, 1969 [6 June, 1968], No. 21260/69. Heading C1M. An inlead-foil-electrode assembly for sealing into a vitreous envelope (especially quartz) comprises a foil I (e.g. of tungsten or molybdenum) which has been etched all over and has feathered edges except for zones 8 and 9 at the ends which are thicker and untreated and taper into the thickness of the foil at 81 and 91. The inlead and electrode (11 and 12, Fig. 3, not shown) have spade-shaped terminals which correspond in shape with the end zones 8 and 9 to which they are attached by welding. The foil may be made by immersing a metal sheet in an electrolytic etching bath whilst supported at its ends by members having plastic shields which fit over appropriately dimensioned areas of the sheet and protect them from the action of the etching liquid. These areas thus remain untreated and are thicker than the treated foil (see Fig. 1, not shown).
