Abstract

1,251,904. Sealing metals and ceramics. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 31 Oct., 1969 [5 Nov., 1968], No. 53492/69. Heading B3V. [Also in Division C1] A devitrifiable glass for sealing to metals and ceramics consists in mol. percentages of SiO 2 9-26; B 2 O 3 9-36; Al 2 O 3 0-16; CaO + SrO + BaO + MgO 20-56; ZnO + CdO 9-56; the CdO being optional and the sum of (CaO + SrO + BaO + MgO + ZnO + CdO) is at least 50. Compositions are chosen to give matching coefficients of thermal expansion and examples are given of sealing together tubes of alumina; an alumina window in a steel frame; lead through joints between metal and metal and between metal and alumina, the glass being in powdered form and sealed in a nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere or a non-reducing atmosphere.
