Abstract

1358365 Ceramic-metal seals PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Nov 1972 [1 Dec 1971] 55137/72 Heading B3V [Also in Division C1] A metal conductor 2 is sealed in a stepped bore 3, 4 in a ceramic wall 1 exceeding 2 mm. in thickness by a vitreous material 5 which fills the part 3 and forms in the bottom of the part 4 a layer 6 of 100-1000 Ám thickness, forming a meniscus on the conductor and the wall 8, the length of part 3 of the bore being not more than 2 mm. A molybdenum conductor 2 in a digital light deflection system is sealed in an alumina wall 1 using the following vitreous material, percentages by weight: MnO 37%, SiO 2 50% and Al 2 O 3 13%. The conductor is positioned in the bore and a suspension of the vitreous material in a 3% solution of nitrocellulose in butyl acetate painted on to the conductor and the bottom of part 4. The vitreous material is fused at 1300‹ C. for 10 minutes in a wet mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen.
