Abstract

1420779 Variable resistors WELWYN ELECTRIC Ltd 15 Feb 1974 [14 March 1973] 12204/73 Heading HIS A variable resistor comprises a resistive film la, which has terminal areas 7, 8, and a collector 11 which is connected by a path 12a to a third terminal area 12, each of the areas 7, 8, 12 and the collector 11 being formed of a dispersion of conductive material in a non-conductive medium. The substrate 1 is of ceramic or glass. In a first embodiment the areas 7, 8, 12, the collector 11 and the path 12a are all formed of the same material as the resistive film la which comprises tin oxide and antimony oxide particles in a glass matrix. A hole 14 receives the carrier of a rotary wiper (17, Fig. la, not shown) which engages an arcuate portion 2 of film la. Each terminal pin 20 passes through a respective hole 9, 10, 13 and washer 24 with a locating tongue 25, and the end 22 of the pin is swaged over. To adjust the resistance of the film la portions 5, 6 may be removed, for example by abrasion. In a second embodiment the resistive film is a dispersion of a noble metal, e.g. ruthenium in a glass matrix. The terminal areas and the collector are formed of conductive plastics material, e.g. a dispersion of carbon particles in an epoxy resin. A path of resistive film material may be interposed between the collector and its corresponding terminal area.
