Abstract

1420481 Treating polyacrylonitrile fibrous materials HOECHST AG 1 Nov 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 50822/73 Heading DIP A wash-resistant deformation, e.g. a fold, crease, pleat or ripple or embossed effect, is imparted to polyacrylonitrile fibrous material by treating the fibrous material with an aqueous medium containing an alkaline earth thiocyanate and urea, drying the material, and deforming and heating the dried material to obtain the required deformation. The aqueous medium preferably contains 1 to 6% by weight thiocyanate and 0.4 to 4% by weight of urea. It may be applied as a bath, e.g. by padding to leave 0.5 to 3% of thiocyanate and 0.2 to 2% of urea on the weight of the fabric. The thiocyanate is preferably calcium thiocyanate. The bath may further contain a wetting agent, a softener, an anti-static agent, an optical brightener or a mixture of two or more of these. The treated material is preferably dried at 20 to 120‹C and mechanically deformed, e.g. by calendar rolls at 100 to 150‹C. The deformation may be fixed by subsequently heating the material to 120 to 140‹C for one to 2 minutes. The materials treated may be in the form of fibrous fabrics, spinning yarns and woven, non-woven and knitted fabrics.
