Abstract

1357739 Treatment of fabrics CALGON CORP 3 May 1971 [7 May 1970] 12649/71 Heading A5E [Also in Division D1] A method of conditioning fabrics in a laundry tumbler dryer comprises uniformly coating the inside of the drum of the dryer with a conditioning agent (as defined below), and tumbling the fabrics in the dryer to effect a transfer of the conditioning agent from the drum of the dryer to the fabric. The conditioning agent is a single chemical substance or a composition which, when applied to the fabric, imparts a desirable property to the fabric such as softness, antistatic, bacteriostatic, moth-proofing or mildew-proofing. The agent may be a single substance or a mixture which acts as (a) a softening and antistatic agent, (b) a softening and bacteriostatic agent, (c) an antistatic and bacteriostatic agent, or (d) a softening, antistatic and bacteriostatic agent. The agent may be a solid, liquid or paste, or it may be applied in the form of an aqueous solution, suspension, or dispersion or an alcoholic solution, suspension or dispersion. Preferably, the agent is formulated as an aerosol composition as described and claimed in Specification 1357740. Such a composition is sprayed to form a coating on the interior of the drum. When otherwise formulated, the compositions may be applied, e.g. by wiping with a cloth or by pump spraying from a bottle. The fabric may be cotton or terry cloth. The method is stated to maintain the wrinkle-free character of permanent press items and to raise the nap on corduroy.
