Abstract

In a process for the screen printing of textile fabrics in which the fabric is printed electrostatically with a dyestuff composition using a screen and an electrostatic field acting between the screen and the fabric the dyestuff composition comprises a textile dyestuff and a dielectric carrier. The composition may also contain an auxiliary dyeing agent such as water-soluble cellulose ether, an alginate or locust bean flow or a derivative thereof. The dielectric carrier is a water soluble natural or synthetic resin or a natural or synthetic resin which may be rendered water soluble by the action of an acid or alkali. The carrier may be a colophony or a derivative thereof; or it may be a vinylpolymer, or a non-hardening phenolic resin, or a polyester or polyamide resin. After printing the dyestuff is fixed on the fabric, the residue of the dyestuff composition being subsequently removed. The fixing may comprise a temporary followed by a permanent step the former being effected by melting the composition under heat. Alternatively, the temporary fixing may be effected by partially dissolving the composition either by spraying the fabric with water or steam or by an organic solvent. Immediately prior to the permanent fixing the fabric may be impregnated with a solution of an alkali containing a reducing agent for the dyestuff. The permanent fixing may be effected by steam or dry heat. The dyestuff composition may be of particulate form the dyestuff particles and any auxiliary dyeing agents used being coated with the dielectric carrier material the coat of such material being formed by interface polymerization or polycondensation of the material or its precursors. The coat may be formed by conservation of the material or its precursors. After the dyestuff has been permanently fixed to the fabric the latter is subjected to a washing treatment to remove any excess dyestuff, dielectric carrier material or auxiliary dyeing agents where used. In multi-impression or colour printing the dyestuff compositions are printed on to the fabric successively each composition being subjected to an immediate temporary fixing step.
