1357740 Biocidal/fabric softener compositions CALGON CORP 3 May 1971 [7 May 1970] 49243/73 Divided out of 1357739 Heading A5E [Also in Divisions C4 and Dl] An aerosol spray laundry composition comprises (a) from 5-45%, preferably from 10-24% by weight of a fabric-softening agent, i.e. a single chemical substance or a composition which, when applied to a fabric, imparts to it softness and optionally other desirable properties, such as antistatic, bacteriostatic, moth-proofing or mildewproofing, (b) from 10-60%, preferably from 24-45% by weight of a non-propellant non-inflammable solvent that is safe to use in a laundry dryer and that gives a homogeneous solution of the softening agent and (c) from 25-75%, preferably from 40-60% by weight of propellant, the propellant and softening agent being mutually compatible. The softening agent may be a single substance or a mixture which acts as: a softing and antistatic agent; a softening and bacteriostatic agent; or a softening, antistatic and bacteriostatic agent. Exemplified softening agents have the formula II where R 1 and R 2 are alkyl groups, at least one of which contains 10-30 carbon atoms and X- is an anion especially chloride. The preferred solvent consists of water, isopropanol and perchloroethylene. Exemplified propellants include tetrafluorodichloroethane, difluorodichloromethane and trichlorofluoromethane. The composition may additionally contain from 1-5% by weight of a surfactant and from 0.01-5% by weight perfume. Other softening agents specified are (1) primary amines of the formula RNH 2 where R is an alkyl group (more than 10C); (2) secondary amines of the formula R 1 NHR 2 where R 1 and R 2 are fatty alkyl groups, at least one of which contains more than 10 carbon atoms (3) tertiary amines of formula R 1 R 2 R 3 N where one or two of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are fatty alkyl groups of more than 10 carbon atoms and the remaining R group is a C 1-4 alkyl group; (4) quaternary ammonium groups of formula I where at least one or two of the R groups are fatty alkyl groups and the remaining two or three groups are C 1-4 alkyl groups and X is an anion, preferably chlorine or bromine; (5) fatty alkyl substituted imidazolines and imidazoles; (6) fatty alkyl sulphonium salts; (7) fatty alkyl phosphonium salts; (8) fatty alkyl guanidines and their salts; (9) non-ionic materials such as polyethylene glycol stearates; and (10) anionic materials. The compositions may be used in the process of the parent Specification 1357739 for treating fabrics in a laundry dryer.
