Abstract

1,260,584. Softening fabrics. ARMOUR INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL CO. 10 Jan., 1969 [11 Jan., 1968], No. 1635/69. Heading D1P. [Also in Division C5] Fabrics, e.g. terry cloth, are softened during laundering by adding to the wash water or rinse water 0.01-0.5% by weight based on the fabric being washed of a softener composition comprising a quaternary ammonium compound having the formula: in which R is an alkyl group containing 8-24 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group, R 1 is an alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms, an aryl group or a group -(CH 2 CH 2 O) m H in which m is an integer of at least 1 and X is an anion, or a quaternized imidazoline or quaternized amido amine compound, and a tertiary amine oxide having the formula: in which R 2 is an alkyl group containing 8-24 carbon atoms and R 3 is an alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms or a group -(CH 2 CH 2 O) n H in which n is an integer of 1-6, the weight ratio of tertiary amine oxide to quaternary ammonium compound, quaternized imidazoline or quaternized amido amine being from 1:1 to 1:5. X may be a halide, acetate, phosphate, nitrate, sulphate, methyl sulphate or ethyl sulphate ion. Suitable quaternized compounds are distearylmethyltriethoxyethanol ammonium methyl sulphate, dimethyldihydrogenated tallow ammonium chloride, distearyl ethanol alkyl benzyl ammonium chlorides and diphenyl-stearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. The treatment medium may also contain rewet agents, dyes and perfumes and the detergent used may be anionic.
