Abstract

A composition suitable for softening and rendering textiles, e.g. cotton and nylon, antistatic comprises, as cationic softening agent, a quaternary ammonium salt having the formula [(R1)2R2R3N]yX in which R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 16-22 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms, R3 is R1 or R2, X is an anion, e.g. a halide, sulphate, alkyl sulphate (alkyl being 1-3 carbon atoms) or acetate, e.g. di (hardened tallow) dimethyl ammonium chloride, or a quaternary ammonium imidazoline salt, e.g. 1-methyl-1-stearylamidoethyl-2-stearylimidazolinium methosulphate, in conjunction with a fatty acid ethanolamide in which the alkyl radical preferably contains 12-18 carbon atoms. The composition may also contain a nonionic optical brightening agent which is a 1,3-diphenylpyrazoline, e.g. 1-(p-sulphonamidophenyl)- 3-(p-chlorophenyl) D 2-pyrazoline and 1(p-methoxy carbonyl-phenyl)- 3-(p-chlorophenyl) D 2-pyrazoline, inorganic salts, perfume, colourants, and additives for obtaining improved freeze-thaw characteristics, e.g. ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and short chain quaternary ammonium compounds. The composition may comprise 2.5-7.5% by weight of cationic softening agent, 3-9% by weight of alkyl ethanolamide and 0.05-0.5% by weight of optical brightening agent. The composition may be made up as an aqueous dispersion by heating the mixed components at 90 DEG C and addition of water to 100% the cooled product thinned if necessary by the addition of an electrolyte e.g. sodium carbonate with stirring, or the composition may be prepared in solid form employing urea in place of water, all the ingredients and a large excess of urea being connected together, cooled and comminuted. The composition may be applied to the fabrics as of 0.1-0.5% by weight aqueous solution in water by immersing the fabric in a bath containing the solution or by spraying or padding. The compositions are preferably applied in the water rinse after washing the textiles.
