Abstract

1418655 Electro-phoretically depositing metallic particles and resin FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 20 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 58911/72 Heading C7B A metal or alloy substrate comprising at least 40% Co, Ni or Fe as major constituent is coating by electro-deposition from an aqueous dispersion containing metallic particles having 0.05 to 20 Á average diameter consisting of or comprising Al, and 0.2 to 7% of an at least 50% ionized organic film-former having at least 12 C atoms per molecule in a metallic particles to film-former weight ratio in excess of 3:1, the total weight of non- volatile solids being maintained below 35% of the dispersion, and the coated substrate is heated in an inert atmosphere e.g. a vacuum or H 2 , first at a decomposition temperature between the decomposition temperature of the film-former and the diffusion temperature of the particles e.g. 800 to 1215‹F until the gaseous products formed are evacuated, then at the diffusion temperature of at least 1270‹F and below 2200‹F for over hour. The substrate may be of stainless steel, modular iron or super alloy used for turbine engine components; examples of such alloys are specified. The particles may be of Al metal or Al-Pt, Al-Pd, Al-Cr, Al-Y, Al-Co-Y or Al-Cr 2 O 3 alloy or particulate mixture; specific compositions are exemplified. The deposition may be anodic, using an acidic film-former dispersed in the bath with a water-soluble base, e.g. ammonia, an amine or alkali metal hydroxide; or cathodic, using a basic film-former dispersed in the bath with a watersoluble acid, e.g. acetic or phosphoric acid. Many examples of polycarboxylic acid resins including coupled drying oils are specified. The acidic resin, e.g. containing lauric or stearic acid, may be used with neutral film-formers, e.g. polyesters, poly- (meth) acrylates or hydrocarbon resins. The basic resin, e.g. lauryl or stearyl amine, may also be used with neutral film-formers; nonionic dispersants and/or thickeners, e.g. hydroxy propylmethyl cellulose, may also be added. Areas not requiring coating may be masked, e.g. by rubber, wax, plastic or a removable metal sleeve. Different metallic particles may be successively electrodeposited.
